You would think, wouldn’t you, that if you organise a golf day in early June then the chances are that you will all be enjoying it in shirt sleeves, sun glasses and factor 20. Don’t you believe it! The Asset Finance Solutions (UK) Ltd first ever golf day, very kindly sponsored by Cambridge & Counties Bank, was played last Friday the 7th June in torrential conditions around a very soggy Kirby Muxloe Golf Club course near Leicester.
But the UK’s leading asset finance brokerage didn’t allow the weather to spoil the fun.
Were we despondent? Not a bit of it. Despite the horrendous weather that forced us to reduce the competition to just 10-holes, everyone who participated was quick to confirm what a brilliant event the competition had been.
Firstly, though we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Simon Hilyer and everyone at Cambridge & Counties Bank, who specialise in property finance and asset funding, for sponsoring the event. We would also like to offer our grateful appreciation to Andy Herridge and his team for organising the day and of course to the very accommodating Kirby Muxloe Golf Club for providing the excellent facilities.
We had planned the day to include four separate competitions:
- Nearest the pin
- Nearest the pin in 2-shots
- Longest drive
- Overall competition winner for teams of four players
Despite the weather, our inaugural golf day was voted a huge success and just over £1000 was raised for charity and everyone teed off in good spirits and although the ball frequently landed into soggy sand traps, was held up by the wet fairways and often aquaplaned across huge puddles, the verdict was that it simply makes golf more interesting. Everyone was delighted with the occasion and of course with the amount of money we raised for our nominated charities.
After 10-holes however, we decided that discretion was the better part of valour and so we all retired to the club house for a welcome shower, change of clothes, a hot drink and delicious refreshments – thanks to the wonderful staff at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club.
For the record the nearest pin competition was decided with the penultimate swing of the club with our own Gavin Houghton taking the honours.
Michael Corlass won the nearest the peg in 2-shots competition.
The longest dive was won by Tom Hilyer.
The overall competition was won by a team that included Gavin Houghton, Stewart Good, Kevin Tonge and Neil Dawson.
Hopefully next year the weather will be better.
